Rod James, the NZTA's Bay of Plenty State Highway Manager says in order to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, the works will be carried out only during the night.
“However the reduced speed limit over the whole area during the works may impact on travel times during the day. The tail back for commuters coming into Tauranga from the north could be longer than usual.
“The highway surface is due for replacement. We’re taking the opportunity to replace the surface with one that is quieter and has a higher skid resistance. The result will be a safer and superior road.”
Resurfacing roads needs to be carried out in dry conditions. So although the work is estimated to take five nights it could stretch out to two weeks if rain sets in.
