Our business brings us into contact with nearly every New Zealander through everything from driver licensing and 'drive safe' advertising campaigns to road signs.

The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for:

  • land transport planning
  • managing the state highway system
  • regulating access to, and participation in, the land transport network
  • promotion of land transport safety and sustainability
  • allocation of government funding for land transport.

Some facts

  • The NZ Transport Agency manages 10,894 km of state highways.
  • State highways account for about 12 per cent of New Zealand's roads.
  • About half of the 36 billion vehicle kilometres New Zealanders travel each year are on state highways.
  • The NZ Transport Agency has more than 4000 agents and outlets.
  • Each year, the NZ Transport Agency processes:
    • 5 million vehicle re-registrations
    • 1 million vehicle ownership changes
    • 2 million road user licences
    • 5.3 million warrants of fitness.
