Safer Journeys and the Safe System

Updated: 26 February 2013

Safer Journeys, is the Government's strategy to guide improvements in road safety over the period 2010–2020.

The strategy envisions a safe road system increasingly free of death and serious injury and introduces the Safe System approach to New Zealand.

This approach represents a fundamental shift in the way we think about road safety.

Safe System for road users

Road users need to ensure that they drive while alert and unimpaired, comply with road rules, choose safer vehicles, and take steps to improve safety and demand safety improvements.

Safe System for system designers

Those of us involved in the transport sector – the 'system designers' – need to shift our thinking if we are to achieve a safe road system increasingly free of death and serious injury.
