Safety around the tracks

Updated: 3 February 2012

We are responsible for promoting safety on and around New Zealand's rail transport networks. This covers aspects ranging from safe driving behaviours around level crossings to discouraging people from trespassing on and around railways. In this section we've drawn together a collection of information sources on rail safety. It's about respecting the danger and staying alert to the risks.

Rail safety education

You can help make sure you stay safe by learning about:

  • National rail safety week (external link)
  • safety at level crossings in the Road code
  • Tracks are for Trains: This is an education programme designed to teach primary school children (years 0-8) safe behaviour on or near trains and railway tracks. It is currently available to schools as a hard copy kit through Police Education Officers. In 2010 online rail safety curriculum material will be developed replacing the existing kit.

Oversized loads

You must get permission before taking an oversized load over railway tracks. Find out more about how to get a permit at the KiwiRail website (external link).
