Christchurch southern access transport study

Introduction

The NZ Transport Agency, in conjunction with its UDS partners, is commencing further investigations into transport options south of Christchurch. This follows on from that initially undertaken in the Christchurch Rolleston and Environs Transportation Study (CRETS).

The Christchurch Rolleston and Environs Transportation Study (CRETS) recommended an option that extended the proposed Christchurch Southern Motorway from the Springs Road/Halswell Junction Road roundabout to reconnect with Main South Road south of Waterholes Road. At this stage there is no certainty that the project will proceed however in order to determine the need, or not, for improvements it is necessary to:

  1. confirm the seriousness and urgency of the transport issues
  2. identify the issues, constraints and opportunities within the broader transport corridor
  3. identify and broadly investigate and assess possible alignment options.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek knowledge of, or information relating to:

  • walking, cycling, public transport and other transport (eg freight) needs in the area
  • the issues we should be considering that might determine the alignment if the project was to proceed
  • known potential development opportunities existing within the study area
  • potential constraints for future transport options, such as access to property.

In order to achieve this, we are seeking feedback from stakeholders and interested parties in order to identify the issues, constraints and opportunities.

No firm alignment has been confirmed at this stage. Generally, the area we are looking at is from the Springs Road/Halswell Junction Road roundabout, passing through in the vicinity of the current Marshs/Shands Roads intersection and coming out onto Main South Road/State Highway 1 at a location south of Templeton and north of Weedons Ross Road.

Consultation process

This is the first round of consultation. The project will occur in a number of stages and there will be an opportunity to be involved at a later stage by making a submission on the draft Final Report.
