Draft erosion and sediment control standard for state highway infrastructure and Draft field guide for contractors

Updated: 1 July 2011

The Draft erosion and sediment control standard and Draft erosion and sediment control field guide for contractors (August 2010) are available for use and comment.

This consultation closed on Friday 1 July 2011

The draft standard has been developed to assist roading practitioners with the selection and design of erosion and sediment control practices.

The standard demonstrates our commitment to lowering environmental impacts, social and environmental responsibility, and improving the contributions of state highways to the well-being of New Zealand.

The field guide is designed to provide guidance for contractors on how to implement erosion and sediment control practices on the ground and also has a number of useful inspection forms, eg a checklist for mulching.

The standard covers:

  • promotion and use of appropriate design methods
  • development and application of practices that minimise risk of erosion and sediment deposition
  • implementation of erosion and sediment control measures
  • identification of risk and problem areas
  • use of best-practice methods unique to each situation to ensure effectiveness
  • early identification of new projects that have a higher risk of erosion
  • support for new techniques and methodologies
  • consultation with local authorities, and
  • protection of sensitive receiving environments.

A series of value for money assessments will be commissioned to assess the standard against current practices. When completed, these assessment reports will be made available on this website.

Submissions closed on Friday 1 July 2011.
