Disqualifications

  • What happens if I'm disqualified?
  • What happens if I need to drive while I'm disqualified?
You may be able to obtain a court order authorising you to obtain a limited licence (commonly known as a work licence)
  • How do I get my licence back after my disqualification ends?
At the end of your disqualification you will be unlicensed and not entitled to drive. Your driver licence card will be permanently cancelled whether it has been surrendered or not. You will need to apply at a NZTA driver licensing agent to reinstate your licence and have a new licence issued before you can legally return to driving.
  • What happens if I drive before my licence has been reinstated?
Driving while unlicensed is a serious offence carrying substantial penalties and if you do, you could be fined and forbidden to drive. If you drive while forbidden, you will be disqualified and either fined or imprisoned. Any vehicle you drive will be impounded whether it is yours or not. If you drive before your licence has been reinstated and you have an accident, any insurance claim that you make may be invalid.
