Changes to driving conditions in Whangarei

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is advising drivers of upcoming changes over the next few weeks to a key intersection as it moves onto the next stage of the city’s highway improvements in Whangarei.

The Transport Agency, in partnership with the Whangarei District Council, is continuing to progress the upgrades to State Highway 1 (Western Hills Drive) through Whangarei. These projects, when completed, will help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whangarei.

The first of these changes to the intersection of SH1/ Selwyn Avenue East and West will be in place from 7pm tomorrow, Friday 26 September.

The changes from 7pm Friday 26 September until 3pm Saturday 27 September 2014:

• The signals at the intersection of SH1 (Western Hills Drive) and Selwyn Avenue East will be switched off and turned into a manually controlled intersection with lane restrictions. Drivers using this intersection will be required to follow the manual instructions given by the point guard on duty, including reducing the approach to SH1 from Selwyn Avenue East reduced to one lane.

The changes from 10am Friday 3 October until 4pm Saturday 4 October 2014:

• The intersection will remain signalised, with SH1 southbound traffic reduced to one lane during off-peak hours. Drivers heading southbound on SH1 should allow provide more time to get to where they are going as it will be reduced to one lane.

All work is weather dependent and will be deferred to the next suitable date.
