Protecting personal information

Law changes to protect personal information held on the Motor Vehicle Register came into effect on 1 May 2011 to better protect names and addresses on the Motor Vehicle Register. Those changes affected access to registered person names and addresses through Motochek. Access to personal information is now restricted and is available through Motochek only for certain persons. Vehicle information continues to be available without restriction. For more information on these law changes see Motor Vehicle Register information and see Information available through Motochek below.

Access to the Motochek system now requires you to register via our Identity and Access Management (IAM) System. The new system requires you to have a RealMe login which authorises you to use a number of government services online. As an existing Motochek customer your Motochek Account will already be registered on to the IAM system, however you will be required to create your RealMe login first. As part of the RealMe registration you will receive a confirmation email of user ID and password which you need to retain. For more information see Identity and Access Management. You only need to register once on using the new Motochek system for the first time.

Any person may seek a special 'authorisation' from the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) to access the Motor Vehicle Register. For further information please see Authorised access to the Motor Vehicle Register.
