Project purpose

Rapid growth in and around Christchurch is placing demand on the state highways, restricting access to the International Airport and the Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (Lyttelton Port).

To ensure Christchurch remains a great place to live and do business, a $660 million highway construction programme has commenced – the most ambitious ever seen in Christchurch.

Over the next 10 years this investment will increase the capacity of roads to handle freight traffic, and improve road safety. For more information visit the project website:

Benefits

The impact of the Christchurch Roads of National Significance programme will create hundreds of jobs, improve access to facilities and destinations in Christchurch and beyond, and allow communities to reclaim their suburban streets.
