Project purpose
The current roads into Christchurch from the south reach capacity during peak hour travel times leading to frustrating delays for motorists travelling to the Christchurch CBD, Lyttelton Port and industrial areas in the south and east of the city. Traffic volumes and congestion are likely to worsen over the next decade without significant improvements.
Benefits
The Christchurch Southern Motorway will improve travel times and increase reliability for traffic travelling from the south to Lyttelton Port and the Christchurch Central City.
Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 (CSM1) will help relieve congestion in the Hornby area, thereby improving safety and access to the existing and expanding industrial areas around Waterloo Road, Shands Road and Parkhouse Drive.
Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) from Halswell Junction Road to Waterholes Road (south of Templeton) will improve safety, health and the quality of life for residents and businesses in the Templeton and Hornby areas through reducing by half the current volumes of traffic.
Stage 3, the 4-laning of Main South Road (MSRFL) from Waterholes Road to Weedons Road, Rolleston, will improve safety and reduce congestion, thereby improving travelling times.
Features
CSM1 includes duplicating the existing 2-lane motorway between Collins Street and Curletts Road, and constructing a new 4-lane median separated motorway between Curletts Road and Halswell Junction Road.
CSM2 will consist of a 4-lane median separated motorway, from Halswell Junction Road to join SH1 just south of Waterholes Road.
MSRFL involves 4-laning the 2-lane SH1 south of Waterholes Road to Weedons Road in Rolleston.
