Purpose

To improve the safety of 1km of State Highway 6 in Blenheim, specifically the intersections of Boyce Street, Colemans Road and Battys/Murphys Roads.

Making changes to this part of the local road and state highway network will improve safety for everyone who relies on this important route.

We expect to improve safety along this section of the highway and help support future growth in the area.

The Safety Improvements will include the construction of two new roundabouts at Boyce Street and Battys/Murphys Roads and changes to the State Highway 6 intersection with Colemans Road.

Benefits

  • keep the entrance from Purkiss Street to Boyce Street open for cars to enter/exit and closing the entrance from Purkiss Street onto Middle Renwick Road (SH6)
  • retain some of the on-street parking on the northern side of State Highway 6 between Colemans Road and Boyce Street, to minimise the effects on businesses in this area. We had previously proposed to remove all the on-street parking
  • separate the eastbound cycle lane through the Boyce Street roundabout from the footpath to avoid conflict between pedestrians and adjacent driveways
  • change the shape of the pedestrian refuges to give cyclists more space and to minimise disruption to vehicles making right-turns along the highway
  • making it more clear who gives way at the merge lanes for Renwick-bound traffic outside Springlands supermarket
  • move the Murphys Road leg of the Battys/Murphys/SH6 roundabout slightly east to avoid a number of underground services in the area (like water, power and telecom cables), and
  • construct sections of water and sewer pipe underneath both intersections before we construct the roundabout to both future-proof these systems and avoid future roundabout disruption.

Project features

This area of Middle Renwick Road was identified in the 2008 Blenheim and Wairau Plains Strategic Study as a growth area and highlighted the need for infrastructure improvements to reduce congestion and make the road safer.

As a result, improvements have been investigated for this 1km stretch of State Highway 6 to improve safety for everyone who relies on this important route.

There is a real mix of premises along this section of State Highway 6, including schools, businesses, a kindergarten and retirement villages. We've considered a range of factors to find the right solution to making this bit of road safer.

The local community and key stakeholders have played an important part in developing and refining options, particularly regarding access.
