Thorndon Overbridge safety improvements

Complete replacement of more than 3km of existing crash barrier, with a new enhanced crash barrier system, together with new posts and anchoring along SH1 Thorndon Overbridge. The replacement extends to both Aotea Quay on and off Ramps and also includes improved barrier terminations at the bridge and ramp approaches.

Project purpose

To provide an enhanced crash barrier system thereby improving road user safety and vehicle containment along SH1 Thorndon Overbridge, and including Aotea Quay on and off ramps.

Features

  • 'Nested Thriebeam' guardrail system - a custom design of crash barrier for Thorndon Overbridge
  • Mesh screens are being fitted below the crash barrier to prevent litter and debris falling from Thorndon Overbridge to areas below

Other facts

The new barrier system is similar to that installed on the recently completed Tauranga Second Harbour Bridge Crossing.
