Project purpose
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), in consultation with the Waimakariri District Council, is investigating options for upgrading SH1 through Woodend. The existing designation is for the road through Woodend to be widened to four lanes. As a result of an earlier round of community consultation (held in 2007), the option to widen the existing SH1 to four lanes is to be investigated, along with the option for a short eastern alignment running between Woodend and Pegasus. The investigation will identify a preferred route, which will be confirmed through designation. This will allow the Woodend community to plan and develop with certainty of the future SH1 corridor.
Benefits
- Improve capacity and efficiency of traffic travelling through the Woodend corridor.
- Improve the road safety, accessibility and liveability of Woodend for residents.
- Improve access and connectivity for residents and businesses of Woodend, Pegasus, Kaiapoi and other local communities.
Features
- The investigation will identify a preferred route, which will be confirmed through designation. This will allow the Woodend community to plan and develop with certainty of the future SH1 corridor.
- The improvements will provide a four-lane corridor from the end of the existing four-lane motorway to the entrance to Pegasus on SH1.
- Safety, road alignment, accesses and road drainage will be upgraded as a result of the improvements.
