1. Where is the road that's going to be sealed?

The road is the northernmost section of State Highway 1 in New Zealand, between Waitiki Landing and Cape Reinga in the far north of the North Island. Cape Reinga is 116 km north of Kaitaia. This project will start at Cape Reinga and seal the 19 km road from there to Waitiki Landing. (See the maps on this site for more detail.)

2. Why will the project begin at the northern end of the road?

We will start sealing at Cape Reinga in the north and work towards Waitiki Landing in the south, in order to avoid damaging the new seal by driving heavy construction vehicles over it.

3. Why does this road need to be sealed? Can't it just be left as it is?

The unsealed road has safety and environmental impacts that will be improved once the road is sealed. By sealing the road, Transit will put an end to the dangerous clouds of dust and the loose gravel on the road surface, benefiting road users and the local ecosystem. Erosion and runoff will also be reduced.

4. Why will it take three years to complete the sealing?

The location of the site is very remote, and there is a limited workforce and the local quarries have limited production capacity. The road also needs to be accessible by the travelling public.
