The level of earthquake damage to the road and rail networks between Picton and Christchurch is unprecedented in our country. There are more than 35 major slips, covering both road and rail routes, between Clarence and Oaro Bay.
Work is well underway making the slips safe for removal. This involves dropping water from a helicopter to dislodge loose rocks and dirt to enable workers and machinery to move on-site to begin removal of the slips. Geologists are also assessing the slips to determine the safest removal option for each slip.
Our top priority is keeping everyone safe and getting State Highway 1 and the Main North Rail Line re-opened as quickly as possible
Work is already underway on repairs to the rail line – the first post-quake train running from Blenheim to Lake Grassmere on 16 January.
