The Mangatawhiri Deviation is a two-lane undivided highway stretching from the Mangatawhiri Bridge to the Maramarua Golf Course, bypassing the Mangatawhiri village.
The 7-kilometre Mangatawhiri Deviation aimed to improve safety by bypassing a section of State Highway 2 that has a poor crash record.
The new alignment provides an improved, straighter section of state highway with fewer intersections. New eastbound and westbound passing lanes provide safe passing opportunities for traffic travelling between Auckland and Coromandel.
This project was completed in 2008.
State Highway 2 is an important regional route carrying large volumes of traffic between Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsular, East Waikato and also the Bay of Plenty – particularly during holiday periods.
The seven-kilometre Mangatawhiri Deviation aimed to improve safety by bypassing a section of State Highway 2 that has a poor crash record, while new eastbound and westbound passing lanes provide safe passing opportunities. Grade separated intersections improve safety for traffic wanting to cross or join the highway.
