The Manukau Harbour Crossing Project is committed to mimimising the impacts of works on traffic.

  • During peak traffic time, existing lane capacity will be maintained continuously
  • Concrete safety barriers will be in place at construction locations to ensure the safety of our workers as well as passing motorists
  • Motorway speed has been reduced to 80 km/h to provide safe access to our construction sites, and because of reduced lane widths
  • Temporary motorway, local road or lane closures will be at night-time only and will be well publicised by NZ Transport Agency. Look for the "road closures" advertisements in the public notices section of the NZ Herald every Tuesday and Friday
  • We will maximise day work and minimise night work to address issues of safety, noise and work productivity

Traffic bulletins are produced every Friday and distributed by email throughout the community as well as to key transport businesses and organisations. If you would like to be added to the distribution list, please contact the project office (0800 SH20 MHX) or email info@mhx.co.nz.

Construction staging

In addition to building new infrastructure, the Manukau Harbour Crossing Project will upgrade what is already there. By carefully programming works, the project will do this while maintaining traffic flows for approximately 80,000 vehicles moving every day through the works zone.

To achieve this, the project will use 'traffic switching'. This refers to the way we will switch traffic from the existing to new infrastructure and then back again.

For example, all traffic across the Manukau Harbour will switch to the new bridge around July 2010. This will enable the existing bridge to be reconfigured, ready to carry northbound traffic only.

Traffic bulletins will give notice of any upcoming traffic switches.
