Volcanic cone protection

In Winstone Park, near Dominion Road bridge, the motorway runs along the base of Mt Roskill. The following features are part of the motorway design to minimise the impact on Mt Roskill

  • The road is located as far north as possible
  • The motorway carriageway has been raised higher in the western direction, to minimise the excavation needed at the base of the mountain
  • The adjoining rail corridor is the minimum width possible
  • Unused land will be reinstated to a natural shape in Winstone Park

Wildlife habitats

  • Local aquatic life such as eels from local creeks have been relocated away from the motorway construction area

Stormwater

  • Temporary stormwater ponds are in place along the length of the project to collect and filter sediment
  • Run-off from the motorway will be filtered by 4 permanent stormwater ponds at Roma Road, Rosemount Road, Keith Hay Park and Melrose Place

Landscaping and urban design

  • All soil on the project is recycled on site
  • The most extensive earthworks are limited to the summer months to limit erosion and sediment
  • 250,000 new plants are being planted along the project to minimise maintenance and restore the local environment after construction
  • The natural basalt rock, a geological feature of the Mt Roskill area, has been cut back and is part of the retaining walls alongside the motorway between Queenstown Road and Hillsborough Road
  • Landscaping in the area enhances the basalt features of the cone

Noise

  • 1.7 km of noise walls are in place to help minimise the noise of construction and the motorway traffic, on surrounding neighbourhoods
