SH2 Wairoa to Bay View

We've made the road safer

In the 10 years to 2015, 21 people died and 56 were seriously injured on SH2 between Wairoa and Bay View.  Most of these crashes happened when drivers lost control and drove off the road or crossed the centreline and hit an oncoming vehicle.

Around 2000 vehicles travel the entire 104km stretch each day with up to 9000 using the Bay View end. This road is an important route for locals, freight and tourists so we’ve made the following improvements to make it safer for everyone.

Improvements

• Created a wider sealed shoulder so there is room to recover if drivers lose control of their vehicle.
• Installed rumble strips to warn drivers who stray out of their lane.
• Installed roadside barriers to stop drivers hitting something harder like a tree, power pole or ditch.
• Created a wide centreline in some areas to keep traffic apart, reducing the risk of head-on crashes.
