Explore the Tauranga Eastern Link

Saturday 1 August 2015

Road open to cyclists: 8.00am to 10.00am

Fancy cycling down the new Tauranga Eastern Link? Bring your bike and ride down the completed road before it opens to vehicles.

For two dedicated hours before the TEL Community Day begins, the road will be open just for cyclists from the Domain Road interchange to the Paengaroa roundabout.

Key tips for cyclists

  • Parking is not provided for people who wish to cycle. You will need to park locally and cycle to the entry point of the TEL.
  • Cyclists can access the TEL at both the Domain Road / Tara Road intersection or at the Paengaroa roundabout at the eastern end of the road.
  • Cyclists will be using the eastbound lanes (heading towards Paengaroa) – one lane in each direction. If you wish to only cycle part of the road, then you can do so.
  • If you wish to cycle during the community day then we encourage you to use the new off-road cycleway. You can access this at Bell Road and Te Tumu Road.
  • Remember to wear your helmet and to share the road, and have fun!

Community day: 10.30am to 3.00pm - walk, run or take the tour bus!

Come along to the community day and get up close to the Bay of Plenty’s largest roading project before it opens to traffic.

  • Information hub
  • Machinery display
  • Vintage car display
  • View highlights of the road
  • Helicopter rides (fee payable)
  • Local food vendor stalls
  • Find out how to use the toll road

The community day will operate on a park and ride system as there is no parking near the TEL site. Parking is available at Baypark and Kiwi360, and from 10.30am to 3.00pm there will be free bus tours up and down the new road.

A mobility bus will be in operation at 11.30am and 1pm from Baypark.

As well as bus tours you will be able to:

  • Hop off the bus at the Domain Road interchange gala and check out the information hub, see the construction machinery and vintage car displays, and get food and drink from some great food stalls.
  • If you're feeling like a walk, or run, you can do so from the Domain Road interchange and walk 5km, 10km or the whole 15km (30km return) length. There are designated bus stops if you get tired!
  • Roller skaters, scooters and skateboarders are also permitted provided they have appropriate safety gear (helmets, kneepads etc).

Fancy the helicopter ride? $30 for 3 minutes is a bargain. Catch the free bus to Kiwi360 where you can hop on the chopper, check out the great gift store and local community stalls.
