Traffic updates

Updated: 31 October 2011

The Victoria Park Tunnel project is being constructed in a confined, built-up area of Auckland. Local road and motorway closures are needed when it is not safe or practicable to undertake the works in normal traffic conditions. Closures are normally at night, when traffic volumes are at their lowest and disruption will be minimal.

Some work is possible only at night, with the motorway closed.

Road works ahead to open Victoria Park Tunnel
11 - 14 November 2011

Expect delays northbound

Severe traffic disruption is likely on the motorway (SH1) north in the vicinity of the Auckland CBD during this weekend of day and night work to open the Vic Park Tunnel.  Between 10pm on Friday night (11 November) and 5am on Monday (14 November):

  • Northbound lanes of the Northern Motorway (SH1) will be closed at night between Nelson Street and Fanshawe Street  (detour will be to Fanshawe St on ramp via Nelson St)
  • The motorway northbound will be one lane only during the day just north of the Nelson Street off-ramp
  • Northbound SH16 to SH1 links will be closed

Plan to use an alternative route north if possible:

  • North via the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) and the newly completed Hobsonville to North Shore (SH18 – SH1) link
  • North via the CBD and Fanshawe St on ramp
  • North via the Curran St on ramp

Check out your best alternative route north at: www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/victoria-park-tunnel/driver.html.

Note that works are weather dependent.
