Construction

Updated: 28 March 2012

Construction on the Waterview Connection project is expected to take 66 months. The twin tunnels will be built using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), starting from the southern end in Alan Wood Reserve, and re-emerging by Great North Road at the northern end of Waterview.

Motorway to Tunnel.

The project is being delivered for and alongside the NZTA by the Well Connected Alliance.

Enabling works: January-June 2012

To prepare for the commencement of construction on the Waterview Connection, the project team will first carry out a series of enabling works, starting in January 2012 between the Maioro St interchange and Alan Wood Reserve.

This initial activity will include the provision of active and passive recreational space, realignment of part of the Oakley Creek, and the creation of a haul route that will facilitate the remove of spoil from the tunnel works without impacting on local roads. These works are being delivered in advance to mitigate the impact of construction proper on the surrounding community

The enabling works will require the removal of some vacant properties within the project designation that are owned by the NZ Transport Agency, and traffic management around the junction of Richardson Rd and Valonia Street. All works will be carried out in accordance with council-approved environmental management plans.

Enabling works will include:

  • Establishment activities (e.g. construction zone fencing /project and way-finding signage)
  • Removal of properties from within designation
  • Construction of two temporary soccer fields (senior and junior), ablution block and a temporary car park at Valonia Street (with field drainage and grass seeding from March 2012)
  • Site Access for heavy vehicles from Richardson Rd (and 8m-wide haul road west through Hendon Park)
  • Construction of temporary stream crossings (for construction vehicle access)
  • Excavation and temporary diversion (until summer 2013) of a section of Oakley Creek adjacent to the sports fields to facilitate their construction
  • Excavation of new stream channels in Alan Wood Reserve and temporary diversion of sections of Oakley Creek into the new alignment in late summer
  • Diversion of utility services around Richardson Road to enable the construction of a road diversion after June 2012
  • Temporary realignment of Richardson Road (from June 2012) while building new Richardson Rd bridge.
