About the project
The projects will create jobs locally and the majority of suppliers and subcontractors will be regionally based. The work will provide a boost to the community.
Communication with local residents and the community is underway on all of the projects.
The six projects are:
- Kamo Bypass stage 2
- Kamo Road to Kensington Avenue
- Fourth Avenue to Selwyn Drive
- SH1/SH14 intersection improvements
- Tarewa Road/SH1 intersection improvements
- Four laning SH1 from Tarewa Road to SH14.
SH1 Kamo Bypass stage 2
Kamo Bypass stage 2 will provide a high quality route north and an alternative to Kamo Road. The project will help to move traffic away from the main city centre and residential areas surrounding Kamo Road. It will also make travelling around the area easier for local residents, businesses and visitors.
It provides a connection to the existing stage 1 bypass east of the railway and extends through the western side of Otangarei, to a southerly connection at Kamo Road/ Western Hills Drive.
Detailed designs will be developed this year. Construction is planned to start in 2010 and take around two years to complete.
As part of the project the Kamo Road and Western Hills Drive intersection will be upgraded with additional widened lanes and cycle facilities.
The Council's new Spedding Road link will provide a connection between Tikipunga and Kamo. It will also provide an alternative north/south connection for the Tikipunga and Glenbervie suburbs and divert traffic from the Mill/Nixon/Hatea route into Kamo.
Tarewa Road to Selwyn Avenue improvements
Kamo Road to Kensington Avenue
A flush median and an additional lane in each direction will be constructed between Kensington Road and Kamo Road.
Fourth Avenue to Selwyn Avenue
During peak periods congestion builds between Fourth Avenue and Selwyn Drive. To ease this by creating more capacity, this project proposes to upgrade the intersections and increase the state highway to four lanes.
SH1/SH14 intersection improvements
Widening all approaches to this intersection and improving traffic signals will improve traffic flows.
Tarewa Road SH1 intersection improvements
Improvements include signalising Tarewa Road intersection. The new signals will improve the intersection by reducing the risk of accidents.
Four laning SH1 from Tarewa Road to SH14
Four lanes will be created on SH1 from Tarewa Road to SH14.
