History
282 and 284 Willis Street Relocation Preparation - 11 April 2005
These two buildings were designed by Franic Penty of the architectural firm Penty and Blake. They are a mirror image of each other and comprise a ground floor shop and accommodation on the first floor. They were constructed in 1901 at the same time as 286 Willis Street (formerly Café/Bar Bodega, next door) which was also designed by Penty and Blake.
The properties have been owned jointly throughout their history. The first owner was the Wellington Loan and Investment Co. In 1899 Michael Barnett purchased the properties. In 1906 Johan Lindberg became the owner who sold them to the Public Trust in 1921. 50 years later John and Eileen Fitchett became the owners and 10 years later the New Zealand Government bought them.
282 and 284 Willis Street Relocation Preparation - 3 May 2005
The design of the buildings follows the common Italianate style of inner city commercial/residential buildings of the Edwardian period. The buildings have plain flat arched windows, cornice, parapet with (originally) balled finials, keystones over first floor windows, and string course under the windows. The ground floor was a standard shop front design with recessed and angled ingo, now made flat. The missing original elements will be reconstructed.
