This trial is now finished. The results of the trial will be released in 2018.
In 2016, the NZ Transport Agency, along with GO Rentals and HMI Technologies, ran a safety trial using real time messaging through bluetooth technology to visiting drivers.
The first stage of the trial ran from 2 July for a period of 3 months on the state highway between Christchurch to Queenstown. The trial was not specifically targeted at visiting drivers but was a chance to judge whether this would be a value added service to the suite of safety measures undertaken by the Transport Agency.
The trial showed some interesting results and the technology worked well in remote areas.
The trial has not yet been progressed beyond this trial stage because while the trial showed potential, we’re still working through how the technology fits with the NZ Transport Agency Technology Strategy and the future desired customer experience we want to provide.
A final report will be published online in 2018.
