Stretch of SH3 near Piopio down to one lane after rock fall

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that a stretch of State Highway 3 (SH3), near Piopio in the King country, is down to one lane following a rock fall.

Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h speed restriction are in place, and minor delays are expected.

The Transport Agency’s regional performance manager, Karen Boyt, said geotechnical experts and Transport Agency staff are currently investigating  the cause of the rock fall.

The rock fall is approximately 5km north of the site of the fatal rock fall in March.

“The road was closed to allow contractors to clear away debris and was reopened to traffic at 7am,” Ms Boyt said.

“After our initial investigation we have chosen to close one lane of the highway  as a safety precaution while we continue to look into the cause of the rock fall.”

The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience and thanks motorists for their patience and understanding.
