SH5 Mohaka bridge maintenance

Updated: 16 March 2012

Work is well underway to repair and strengthen the surface (or "deck") of the Mohaka bridge. This work will take approximately 2-3 months and will extend the bridge's lifespan by approximately 15 years, as well as allow the bridge to accommodate heavier loads.

While the NZTA recognises that this work may be disruptive, it is important that we upgrade the deck now, to ensure that we maximise the bridge's lifespan and load capability. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

What's happening now

Work is well underway, and we expect the project to be finished within the original 2-3 month time frame.

We have now finished waterproofing and resurfacing the bridge deck. We are now working to strengthen the slabs underneath the bridge.

Contractors will continue to programme all work so it can be completed in the minimum time possible.

Traffic management

Manned traffic management is in place 24 hours each day, seven days a week. There is single-lane access across the bridge, controlled mainly by traffic signals. There may occasionally be short closures (up to ten minutes).

What about heavy vehicles crossing during the work?

Light vehicles and class 1 heavy vehicles (up to 44 tonnes) will continue to have access over the bridge throughout the construction period.

Class 1 vehicles that are overloaded cannot use the bridge during construction, as they may cause damage to the deck strengthening work as it is being installed.

What about over-dimension and overweight vehicles?

Permitted over dimension and overweight vehicles will have restricted access to the bridge during the contract period. Access is on Monday and Thursday evenings between 6pm and 6am.

Over-dimension and overweight vehicles will need to register their crossing with NZTA's Bridge Consultant 24 hours prior to the crossing time. Please contact Opus International Consultants, Napier, on 027 237 3600 or 027 449 7128 if you wish to register a vehicle for crossing.

There are two large vehicle staging areas: north of the bridge at McVicars Rd/SH5 intersection and south of the bridge at the Crohane Forest entrance (Churchbush Rd), just south of Waitara Rd/SH5 intersection.

Very large vehicles such as houses will need to check they can use the bridge with the construction and traffic management equipment which will be in place.

Vehicles who have not registered or those arriving outside the planned crossing windows will not be able to cross.

Further updates on the project will be available on this site. Alternatively, you can contact Dale Nicholls, Senior Asset Manager Napier, on 06 974 6508 or on on dale.nicholls@nzta.govt.nz.
