Updated: 29 March 2011

This section looks at ways seniors can keep themselves safe when using public transport and alternative transport schemes.

Consider different travel options.

Consider different travel options.

Choosing public transport can help you get out and about, by bus, train or ferry.

Free travel with the SuperGold Card

The SuperGold Card is available to all eligible New Zealanders aged 65 years or over, and those under this age who receive the New Zealand Superannuation or the Veterans Pension. SuperGold Card holders are entitled to free off peak travel on scheduled urban public transport services within regions. For more information visit the SuperGold website www.supergold.govt.nz.

Community transport schemes (Total Mobility)

Getting into a taxi.

Community transport schemes and subsidies may be available in your area, for example the Total Mobility Scheme, which provides a subsidised taxi service to people with serious mobility constraints by way of taxi vouchers that provide a discount of 50 percent off the normal taxi fare. It also provides funding to help purchase and install wheelchair hoists in taxi vans. The scheme is funded in partnership by local and central government. Local governments (usually regional councils) manage and operate the scheme in most regions.

Carpooling

Travelling together with other people is travelling smarter. Carpooling - ride-sharing or lift-sharing is cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly than single car journeys. Find a carpool scheme in your region.
