The standards that apply to your vehicle

Technical standards set out the requirements vehicles must meet when manufactured. To apply the standards, we group vehicles into two categories - light and heavy. We measure this in terms of a vehicle's gross vehicle mass (GVM), which the manufacturer specifies as the maximum allowed weight of the vehicle when loaded. Light vehicles have a GVM of 3500 kilograms or less. Heavy vehicles have a GVM of more than 3500 kilograms.

Here, you can find the specific standards for lights, tyres and other safety features.

Standards for light vehicles

Cars, motorcycles and vans are some of the most common light vehicles - and the most vulnerable in a crash. New Zealand’s standards aim to ensure they are as safe as possible.

Standards for heavy vehicles

Brake safety is a major focus of the requirements for heavy buses, trucks and trailers – those vehicles with a GVM over 3500 kilograms
