Application for replacement driver licence while overseas (DL2A)

Use this form if you need to get a replacement driver licence and:

  • you're not in New Zealand, and 
  • you don't have a verified RealMe identity. 

You may also be able to have your licence expiry date extended by up to 12 months. 

This application will take up to 20 working days to process, and then we'll send your new driver licence to your overseas address. 

Don't use this form if you're in New Zealand.

RealMe Identity

If you have a verified RealMe identity, and you don't want to extend your licence expiry date, you can apply for a replacement driver licence using a different application. This application is instant, and we'll send you your driver licence straight away.

Before you make this application

Evidence of identity

You'll need to upload certified copies of your evidence of identity. Copies of your ID can be certified by a:

  • lawyer
  • solicitor
  • notary public
  • court registrar
  • embassy official
  • justice of the peace, or 
  • police officer. 

Please make sure that the person certifying the documents clearly indicates which of the above they are. This is usually done by having the stamp/seal of the certifying officer/organisation stamped on the copy.

You'll need to call us to pay for the replacement licence before you make this application.
You can call us on +64 6 953 6270 Monday to Friday 8am to 5.30pm, New Zealand time. You'll need to pay the fee of $38.20 by Visa or MasterCard debit or credit card. 

We'll give you a reference number to include with this form. You won't be able to complete the application without a reference number.

You'll need to download a PDF application form, print it and complete it, and send it in to us. You'll still need to provide certified copies of your evidence of identity, and call us first to pay the fee.

Why do you need a replacement driver licence?

Signature can't be changed

You can't change the signature on your driver licence while you're outside mainland New Zealand. If you continue with this application, your new name will show on your new driver licence, but your signature will remain the same. 

No address on licence

If you don't want your address printed on your licence, you can just update your address online. 

You don't have to have your current address printed on your driver licence.

Expired more than 12 months

We can't extend your driver licence if it's already been expired more than 12 months. 

If it has, you'll need to wait until you're back in New Zealand to renew your driver licence.

We can only print New Zealand addresses on our driver licences. If you've selected to print an overseas address on your driver licence, you'll need to select a New Zealand address instead, or not have an address printed on your licence.

If you still have your driver licence (eg it's been defaced), or you find it before your new licence arrives, please destroy the old licence when your new one arrives. This prevents the old licence being confused with the new licence, and stops anyone being able to use it fraudulently. 

The information requested is required to process an application for a driver licence. Collecting this information is required by Part 3 of the Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999. Some of the particulars you provide will become part of the Driver Licence Register. Collection, dissemination and release of this information is authorised by the Land Transport Act 1998 and Part 7 of the Privacy Act 2020.

Waka Kotahi (and its agents) will hold, store, use, or disclose any personal information collected on this form in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. Waka Kotahi (and its agents) may also use some of these particulars to provide you with information relating to driver licensing and driving, or to contact you for feedback on our services.

Under the Electoral Act 1993, s 263B, the Electoral Enrolment Centre operates an authorised information matching programme with Waka Kotahi. The purpose of this programme is to assist in keeping the Electoral Roll up-to-date.

To keep the Driver Licence Register up-to-date Waka Kotahi also operates an authorised information matching programme with Births, Deaths and Marriages. Please refer to the Privacy section of our website for more information.
