Changes at busy Whangarei intersection for SH1 upgrade

|

Significant changes are being made to the layout of one of Whangarei's busiest intersections as part of the NZ Transport Agency's project to improve State Highway 1.

The layout of the lanes at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 14 and Maunu Road will be changed from Sunday evening, 25 August before the Transport Agency starts its main construction work to upgrade the intersection. The changes will remain in place until next April.

The changes from Sunday 25 August are:

  • Dedicated right turn from SH1 (Western Hills Drive) into SH14
  • Additional shared through lane/left turn westbound from Maunu Road into SH14
  • Additional shared through lane / left turn eastbound from SH14 into Maunu Road
  • Right turn from SH14 into Otaika Road will become a shared through lane / right lane.

The Transport Agency's Highways Manager, Tommy Parker, says people will need to take care at the intersection for their safety and the safety of contractors.

"We're not restricting any movements with these changes, just the layout so that we can keep our construction disruptions to a minimum. It is a live work site and care will be needed at this busy intersection," Mr Parker says.

Mr Parker says the contracting team has worked well to keep the project on target. "Enabling works at the intersection are nearing completion which will give way to the main construction works, set to start in September."

The Transport Agency's project also includes safer facilities for walkers and cyclists, and widening the highway with an extra lane in each direction. These improvements will support economic growth in and around Whangarei by helping ease congestion and making journey times more reliable.
