Changes at Lincoln on Auckland’s Northwestern

|

After this Queen’s Birthday Weekend, there will be a number of changes affecting drivers using the Lincoln Road interchange on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16).

Next Thursday (5 June), drivers will use the new eastbound on-ramp at the interchange. This will be under temporary traffic layout as final works are completed at the bottom of the on-ramp.

Another significant change will occur the following Monday (9 June), when westbound traffic approaching the Lincoln Road interchange will use the newly completed Henderson Creek Bridge on the motorway.

These changes will allow the NZ Transport Agency to raise the temporary speed limit on the motorway between the Henderson Creek and Lincoln Creek bridges from 70kph to 80kph in both directions, maintaining a consistent speed through the project sites.

“Once we’ve moved traffic onto the new bridge, a grey lifting gantry - Goliath as it is affectionately known on site - will begin the deconstruction of the old bridges on the motorway. This will take about three months, and we’re asking drivers to continue to be careful through the area” says the Transport Agency’s Acting Highway Manager Steve Mutton.

When the bridges are demolished, the last section of upgrade work will start with the construction of remaining bridges over Henderson and Lincoln Creeks.

“The team are looking forward to being able to get the new bridges underway, with the end line in sight. We’re working to have the entire upgrade completed by the middle of next year,” says Mr Mutton.

The Lincoln Road improvements are part of a suite of projects to complete the Western Ring Route – Road of National Significance - prioritised by the Government to support growth and economic development in Auckland. The alternative motorway route to SH1 will improve connections between Manukau in the south, Auckland International Airport, Waitakere and the North Shore, and improve regional connections north and south of the city.
