The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists that they may experience delays on SH1 south of Kaikoura on Monday as work continues to stabilise the hillside following the massive slip last month.

Traffic will be stopped for periods of up to 30 minutes from 10am on Monday 4 October, weather permitting, to enable contractors using a helicopter to sluice loose material from the hillside. The work will be carried out in between trains and is expected to be completed by the end of the day.

“It’s important we free any loose debris from the hillside, both to ensure the safety of motorists and for the security of this vital route.” says NZTA Senior Asset Manager Barry Stratton.

Mr Stratton says the NZTA praises the ongoing efforts of contractors in keeping the highway open to allow the flow of freight through to the earthquake hit Canterbury region.

The NZTA thanks motorists for their patience, and will be working to minimise disruption to motorists.
