Expect delays on road to Kawhia – underslip closing one lane

|

A slip on Kawhia Road, State Highway 31 (SH31) is being closely monitored while a repair plan is developed.

The under-slip is west of the lookout on the road to Kawhia. It’s reduced to a single lane past the site, with a speed restriction in place while Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency oversees the geo-technical work and repair plans.

“We are mindful SH31 is the route in and out of Kawhia – and that there are no sealed alternatives, so we want to keep this road open until repairs can be done as long as it continues to be safe to do so,’’ says Waka Kotahi System Manager for the Waikato, Cara Lauder.

“The site is being closely monitored for further deterioration and we will start geotechnical investigation work today. We’re working under urgency to develop a repair solution.

“About 800 vehicle a day use Kawhia Road and around 13 per cent are trucks. We want to reassure the community that it’s our priority to repair this slip and sure up the road as quicky as possible,” Ms Lauder says.
