Final weekend closure as NZTA completes Maioro St improvements

The third and last extended closure along a section of Auckland's Southwestern Motorway (State Highway 20) will begin this Friday night (19 August) as the NZ Transport Agency's starts the final programme of works to improve the Maioro Street interchange in New Windsor.

After Friday's evening peak, the Sandringham Road roundabout will be closed for the weekend and all northbound traffic will leave the Southwestern Motorway at Dominion Road. The Dominion Road interchange will also be the entry point for people driving south to Auckland International Airport, Manukau and beyond. Drivers have the choice of using Dominion Road, Hillsborough Road or Queenstown road as alternative routes.

This extended closure will allow the NZTA and its contractors (Fletcher Construction) to complete the new motorway on-ramp from Maioro Street over Sandringham Road.

A new interchange layout will be open in time for the morning peak next Monday (22 August).

'The interchange has been totally re-built and drivers will need to use it with care as they get used to the new layout," says the NZTA's State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker. "The Maioro Street/Sandringham Road roundabout has gone, replaced by a new half diamond interchange, two new bridges and new motorway on and off ramps."

The Interchange marks the southern entrance for the Waterview Connection project joining the Southwestern and Northwestern (SH16) motorways. Waterview, which will be the country's biggest roading project to date, is a key piece in the Western Ring Route road of national significance which will have a major impact on the way transport moves around Auckland.
