Full Waikareao Estuary path in Tauranga now open after repairs

|

The full Takitimu Drive side of the Waikareao Estuary pathway is now open to the public.

Waikareao Estuary pathway

A section of the path had to be closed following damage from a storm and king tide which hit Tauranga in early January 2018.

Initial repairs were undertaken earlier this year but the latest closure was for more permanent repairs.

NZTA Bay of Plenty Transport System Manager, Rob Campbell, says the sea wall has been reinforced and repairs have been carried out on the path and bridge supports.

“We’re happy to have the path open to the public again and we’d like to thank people for their patience during this work,” Mr Campbell says.

A further layer may need to be added to the path to finish off the work later this year. The path will be monitored to ensure the existing material settles before it’s decided if a final surface will be applied. The Transport Agency will advise the public when and if this is needed.

A video of the repaired path will be posted to NZ Transport Agency social media.
