Heavy rain and flooding close Coromandel roads

|

The NZ Transport Agency says heavy rain and flooding has closed roads across the Coromandel and people should avoid all non-essential travel in the area.

State Highway 25 is currently closed at three locations:

  • at Tapu on the Thames Coast
  • east of Coromandel township
  • South of Whitianga

State Highway 25A is also closed due to a slip.

We are also monitoring river levels at known flooding points south of Tairua, south of Thames and between Paeroa and Waihi.

Waikato Systems Manager Karen Boyt, says we are asking people to stay off the roads if they can because river levels are still rising in places such as Paeroa in Thames and we are expecting more roads to close over the course of the evening.

“We advise motorists before starting their journey to check with the NZTA’s Freephone 0800 4 HIGHWAYS or 0800 44 44 49, or our website www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link) for up to date information on all road conditions,” says Karen.

The flooding is expected to worsen this evening due to a high tide at 9pm.
