Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.

Lower North Island

  • State Highway tunnel maintenance will be underway in Wellington next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. There will be night closures (9 pm – 5:30 am) for the Mount Victoria, Arras, and Terrace Tunnels while this work is underway. Drivers travelling through the Wellington CBD on these nights will have to use local road detours and can expect longer travel times.
  • Regular users of State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill need to prepare for the next round of scheduled night closures for maintenance and safety improvements. There will be five nights of closures starting Sunday, 14 April.
  • People travelling on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully can expect to see lane closures Sunday to Wednesday for paving works. Road crews will be working nightly, 6 pm to 5 am.

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 30 March). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
