The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (11 June 2023).
Important information for drivers
Winter driving:
Winter is upon us and with it winter driving conditions. Daylight hours are shorter, so it is important to be visible when driving at dusk and dawn - Turning your headlights on makes it much easier for other road users to see you and reduces the risk of crashes.
Winter also brings frost and the risk of icy roads, particularly on alpine and inland routes. If you are in shaded areas where frost and black ice are a risk, drive to the conditions, slow down, allow for longer stopping distances, and avoid any sudden/heavy braking.
North Island:
- Users of State Highway 2, Masterton to Carterton, need to be aware of restrictions on local roads. The Carterton District Council has measures in place on Hughes Line
- Planned reconstruction work for State Highway 2, Chapel St, Masterton has been postponed due and won’t be happening this weekend as originally planned. It will now begin on Friday, 16 June.
- There will be a maintenance closure on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill on Sunday night, 11 June
South Island:
- Maintenance and upgrade works continue until July on State Highway 6, Hira – Rai Saddle.
- Night closures are planned for the week of 18 June for State Highway 65, Shenandoah
