The NZ Transport Agency has a number of projects underway in the Lyttelton Tunnel in July.

The works, which will restrict the tunnel to one-way operation from 9 pm to 6 am (ie overnight) began last week and continue this week, 11 – 15 July.

What is happening?

There are three different projects underway:

  • Replacement of the centre line smart studs (illuminated cat’s eyes) for the full length of the tunnel
  • Cleaning and replacement of the tunnel lighting and
  • Installation of air quality monitoring equipment.

By coordinating these works, the Transport Agency is able to will save a further seven nights of closure, said Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright.

“Thanks to everyone for their patience and planning around these short delays while the one-way system operates this week.”
