Making Masterton better. State Highway 2, Chapel Street, upgrades are on the way

|

The bumps, lumps, and patches on State Highway 2 through Masterton are about to be dealt with.

Beginning on 24 January, contractors will be working on a series of projects that will see the road resurfaced and its base reconstructed in specific areas. The road is now in a condition where replacement and reconstruction work is needed, not just repairs.

Mark Owen, Regional Manager Wellington/Top of the South, says the work will happen in two stages.

“There will be resurfacing work on two sections in January and February, and this will be followed by reconstruction work on two other sections in April and May. Our aim is to provide a stronger, safer road for all road users – cars, trucks, cyclists, and pedestrians.”

Mr Owen says the resurfacing work will begin on 24 January and will be done at night.

“We are deliberately timing it for between 7 pm, and 5.30 am as this is when traffic volumes are lower, and disruptions are minimised. The road will be closed while the work is underway. This will let our contractors complete the work more quickly and efficiently. We will announce timings of closures and schedules for the reconstruction work when that work is about to get underway.”

Planning for this project has been underway for some time. Strengthening work last year prepared some sections for resurfacing and held others intact until reconstruction work could start. Major resurfacing was done from Waltons Avenue to north of Michael Street in late 2021.

Mr Owen says local businesses, residents, and stakeholders are being consulted, and every effort is being made to minimise the impact of the works on them.

“We know road works such as this can cause frustration, delays, and affect businesses. But a key infrastructure link like this must be maintained and kept safe and up to standard for all road users. I want to thank local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding while this work is done.”

The project will be carried out by the Wellington Transport Alliance
