Nelson’s main road closing from 6.30 pm tonight, tree removal

|

Nelson’s Rocks Road (SH6) will be closed at 6.30 pm tonight (Wednesday, 18 December) for at least two hours for a large oak tree to be removed above the highway.

The closure could be in place until 9.30 pm so people should plan their journeys accordingly, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises.

The recent heavy rain has undermined the tree’s roots and caused it to topple, however it has been secured temporarily. It is being removed by Nelson City Council’s Nelmac contracting team.

The road will be closed between Richardson St, in Stepneyville, and Bisley Ave traffic lights, Tahunanui.

Electronic boards will advertise tonight’s closure this afternoon at two places on SH6 at Annesbrook roundabout and SH6 Haven Road.

The local detour route is:

For southbound traffic, turn left onto Richardson Street, right onto Princess Drive, onto Moana Ave onto Bisley Ave and back onto SH6. Reverse for northbound traffic. Please note this detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

  • The highway was closed through Stepneyville last night when a slip was brought down after heavy rain on the clay cliff face.
The road closure will run between the yellow circle and yellow arrow – Tahunanui traffic lights to Stepneyville. The rectangle marks the site of the oak tree.
