Nightime closure State Highway 2 Karangahake Gorge


There will be an overnight closure through the Karangahake Gorge on State Highway 2 on Monday 18 March.

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists there will be a full closure between School Road, in Karangahake Village and Waitawheta Road in Waikino with SH2 closed to through traffic between Paeroa and Waihi on Monday evening between 8pm and 5am.

The detour options are to the north via Hikuai and Kopu which will 1 hour and 20 minutes to your journey, or to the south via Tauranga and Matamama which will add an addition 1 hour and 45 minutes travel time.

Overnight on Tuesday 19 March and Wednesday 20 March work will occur within Waikino only, between Old Waitekauri Road and Seddon St. A detour will be available via Waitawheta Road and Old Tauranga Road which will add around 15 minutes to your journey.

This work is a continuation of the asphalt resurfacing that occurred last week and is weather dependant and may need to be postponed.
