The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Carterton District Council (CDC) have put the green light on a $1.5m road and urban design contract on State Highway 2 (SH2) along High Street of Carterton, which will improve pedestrian and road user safety.

NZTA Regional Manager Graham Taylor announced yesterday that the proposed work along Carterton High Street will be undertaken by Fulton Hogan Ltd.

Included in the project are improvements to the Pembroke Road Intersection, a new roundabout at the Belvedere/Park Roads Intersection, an upgrade of CDC’s water and sewer mains, footpaths, vehicle crossings, and new kerbing along the street.

“This combination of work will improve pedestrian and road user safety and reduce travel times for road users passing through the intersections on this section of SH2,” says Mr Taylor.

This project combining local council and highway improvements is the result of a cost-sharing agreement between the two organisations, a move being hailed by CDC’s Chief Executive Colin Wright.

“This is a great example of two entities working closely together to achieve maximum benefit for the people in this area.

“By entering into this cost sharing agreement NZTA and CDC are ensuring the necessary work gets done with minimal disruption,” he says.
