TEL construction team wins health and safety award

The Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) construction team were announced as winners at the Safeguard NZ Workplace Health and Safety Awards last week.

The Fulton Hogan HEB Construction Alliance (FHHCA), contractor for the TEL, were awarded the Kensington Swan ‘best initiative to address a safety hazard’.

The team developed a bag filling system which assisted the construction of the central embankment of the Mangatawa interchange on State Highway 2 (SH2). This dramatically reduced manual handling on the job, reducing risk to workers and saving time.

NZ Transport Agency Bay of Plenty Highway Manager Brett Gliddon says the Transport Agency is very pleased to see the TEL team leading the way with innovation to workplace health and safety. “Safety is a strong overall focus for the TEL; for the team during construction and also the end result with the delivery of safety benefits to motorists once it is open”.

”It’s great to see health and safety being made a priority. FHHCA pride themselves on their initiative and commitment to health and safety on the TEL and this is just one award that acknowledges that”.
