Transmission Gully update – 20 January 2022


Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is continuing to work with the Transmission Gully contractor Wellington Gateway Partnership (WGP) and their subcontractors, CPB HEB Joint Venture and Ventia, to support getting the new motorway open to the public as quickly as possible.

As the Public Private Partnership (PPP) contractor for Transmission Gully, WGP has subcontracted CPB HEB to undertake the motorway’s design and construction, and Ventia to operate and maintain the motorway for 25 years, after which it will be handed over to Waka Kotahi at an agreed standard.

There are still many outstanding construction issues to address, safety and quality assurance tests to meet, and consent compliance tasks to complete before the Transmission Gully motorway can safely and legally open to the public.

Out of 100 safety and quality assurance tests currently required under the PPP contract before the road can safely and legally open, as at 14 January 2022, 52 final test submissions have been received from CPB HEB, of which 39 have been accepted by the Independent Reviewer as meeting the required standards.

As at 17 January 2022, 32 consent tasks are complete and 10 consent tasks remain outstanding. Most importantly two of these outstanding tasks relate to stormwater management. A fully functioning stormwater system, capable of treating road run-off water to the required standard must be operational for road opening.

“We are working hard to reach a pragmatic solution with the contractor and subcontractors to get the road safely and legally opened as soon as possible, balanced with protecting the long-term quality and reliability of the road,” Waka Kotahi General Manager Transport Services Brett Gliddon says.

Waka Kotahi will provide an update on the expected opening date as soon as a timeframe on completing the required work is known. This update likely to be provided in mid-February 2022. Waka Kotahi will not be able to comment further on the opening of the road until then.
