Upcoming night closures State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill

|

Regular users of State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill need to be ready for upcoming night closures for essential maintenance.

9 May update

Regular night-time State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill users must make bookings if they need to cross the hill during planned maintenance works beginning this coming Sunday.

The route will be closed at night for essential maintenance over two weeks, beginning 14 May. Only people with bookings can be escorted over the hill during the closures. Numbers are strictly limited and should be booked in advance by emailing: customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz

Bookings for each week must be made by the preceding Friday. So, if you need to travel over the hill next week, you must book a spot by this Friday.

The first week of closures also coincides with university graduation ceremonies in Wellington. Families and graduates travelling to Wellington for these events must factor the closures into their travel plans

3 May traffic bulletin

The closures will be for 10 nights over two weeks, beginning Sunday, 14 May (excluding Friday and Saturday nights).

Closure schedule

  • 9 pm to 4 am nightly - Sunday, 14 May to Friday morning, 19 May.
  • 9 pm to 4 am nightly - Sunday, 21 May to Friday morning, 26 May.

These night closures significantly reduce the number of daytime disruptions for road users.
Road crews can complete a large amount of essential maintenance, new culvert construction and slip prevention work safely because multiple crews can work across the hill simultaneously without disrupting traffic.

Information for road users

  • An escorted vehicle service will be available for shift workers and others with light vehicles and special circumstances who must cross the Remutaka Hill during these closures.
  • We cannot offer crossings over the Remutaka Hill during these maintenance closures unless a traveller has special circumstances and has booked an escorted crossing.
  • Numbers are strictly limited and should be booked in advance with customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz
  • Drivers turning up without a booking will be turned away or will have to wait at the closure point until the road reopens.
  • Emergency Services will have access over the route while the work is being carried out.
  • More information about the closures can be found at www.nzta.govt.nz/remutaka

The first week of closures coincides with university graduation ceremonies in Wellington. People attending graduation events will have to book to cross the hill if returning to Wairarapa after nine pm.

We understand the closure may inconvenience people travelling between Wairarapa and the Hutt Valley. Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their patience and understanding as contractors carry out this essential work.

Regular users of this route are encouraged to stay up to date on upcoming closures. While these dates are fixed, bad weather may cause work to be cancelled.

HEADS UP:
Motorists should also plan for two daytime one-hour road closures from 29 May to 1 June for feral goat control aerial operations.
