Weather warning – drive to the conditions

|

With bad weather forecast for the upper South Island and Wellington region on Friday, 8 July, Waka Kotahi is urging drivers to take special care on the roads.

Metservice is forecasting potential heavy rain for Wellington on Friday, with strong northerly winds rising to gale force in exposed areas. A heavy rain warning is in place for Nelson for Friday morning.

Mark Owen, Regional Manager Maintenance and Operations, says people need to take extra care on the roads when the weather is bad.

“With high winds forecast, we want high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists to take extra care, especially in exposed areas like the Remutaka Hill. Please, drive to the conditions and follow all advisory warnings. Also, consider if the trip you’re making is really necessary. If it’s not, stay home and stay safe”.

For those who do have to travel, Mark Owen says to check the road conditions before you go.

“Our journeys website is regularly updated with the latest information covering delays, roadworks and road closures. Taking a few minutes to check it before you head out can save you a lot of time and hassle”, Mr Owen says.
