Wellington SH1 open to one lane - update 5.30pm

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists that State Highway 1, the main route from Wellington to the Kapiti Coast is now open to one lane northbound. As there is still surface flooding, motorists should exercise caution and drive to the conditions, watching speeds and following distances.

Motorists should expect significant delays as there is a backlog of traffic to clear, and if possible, consider delaying their journeys until later in the evening.

The Transport Agency is working to open a southbound lane between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton, however State Highway 58 will remain closed over night.

Two lanes are open northbound on State Highway 2 between Ngauranga to Petone. There are significant backlogs and congestion on this route. Two lanes are now open southbound. Caution is also advised on this route due to residual surface flooding.

One option to get to from Wellington to the Hutt Valley is to use trains. Check link) for latest updates and timetables.

Due to severe flooding and slips the following roads will be closed overnight:

  • State Highway 58 from State Highway 1 at Paremata to Haywards Interchange at State Highway 2
  • Grays Road
  • Paekakariki Hill Road

People can call 0800 44 44 49 for updates and the Transport Agency’s website and social media accounts will be also updated as more information is available.
